Security and trust
How N1 holds and moves funds, settles trades and manages risk, as the N1 docs describe it, and who is behind it.
Funds
How funds are held and moved
A Solana wallet owns your N1 trading accounts, up to eight of them. The connected wallet controls its accounts and authorizes account actions. To trade without signing every order, the wallet authorizes a session key that can act for it until the session expires or the wallet revokes it; a revoked session cannot submit actions.
Deposits from Solana go through the Proton bridge, and the N1 app takes deposits from other supported chains through Unifold. A deposit is recorded by the bridge and credited to the trading account you select. A withdrawal names an asset, an amount, a source account and a destination wallet; it is forwarded to settlement at the next settlement update. A withdrawal that would leave the account below its required margin can be rejected. An external withdrawal costs 1 USDC under normal conditions, and the app shows the net amount before you confirm.

Settlement
How trades settle
The order book, RFQ and margin system are native modules of the N1 network, secured by validators, rather than contracts on shared compute. Accounts settle in USDC.
For each block the operator publishes the transaction data to the data availability network, where it can be erasure coded and sharded across validators. Execution produces a receipt tied to that data. Validators check the receipt before signing a state transition certificate, which any client can fetch.
Today the network runs on Proton with a curated operator. Its driver batches actions into blocks and commits them to the Bridge contract; validators monitor proposed blocks and halt withdrawals if they detect a bad update. If the operator stops serving users, governance and monitoring can take over or force withdrawals. The docs describe the next phases as Jito (Re)staking shared security and then a native N1 validator set.

Risk
How risk is managed
- Each trading account is a cross-margin portfolio. Opening or adding exposure needs initial margin; below maintenance margin, positions become eligible for liquidation.
- Risk uses a conservative index price built from oracle confidence bounds, so account health is not overstated.
- Orders priced outside a band of 20% around the index price are rejected. A market freezes when its oracle price moves faster than a set threshold, and an oracle outage begins after one minute without an update.
- Liquidation cancels risk-increasing orders and reduces positions until the account is healthy. More distressed accounts can have their positions transferred to the backstop at prices near the index price. Liquidated users pay a liquidation fee.
- Collateral in one subaccount does not support another, and liquidation is evaluated per account.
- Discovery Markets can carry tighter limits, move to reduce-only or pause when the reference price is unreliable or liquidity is insufficient.

Team
Who is behind N1
Null Studios is a core contributor to the N1 network. Its founders have built low-latency onchain trading and order-book systems since 2020. N1 is backed by investors including Founders Fund, IMC, Amber and GSR.
About N1 covers the history from Layer N to N1 and N1 Exchange, and About the team in the docs covers the founders.

FAQ
Questions about N1
- Is N1 legit?
- N1 is a Layer 1 blockchain built for trading. Null Studios is a core contributor to the network, and N1 is backed by investors including Founders Fund, IMC, Amber and GSR. N1 Exchange runs at app.n1.xyz and is documented at docs.n1.xyz. Sites such as n.exchange and N1.exchange are not affiliated with N1.
- Is N1 Exchange safe?
- Your Solana wallet controls your N1 trading accounts and authorizes their actions. Today the network runs on Proton with a curated operator, and validators monitor proposed blocks and halt withdrawals if they detect a bad update. A margin system limits the risk each account can take and liquidates accounts that fall below maintenance margin. Perpetual futures are leveraged, and leverage magnifies losses.
- Who runs N1?
- Null Studios is a core contributor to the N1 network. The network runs today on Proton with a curated operator and validator monitoring, and the N1 docs describe the next phases as Jito (Re)staking shared security and then a native N1 validator set.
- What happened to Layer N and 01?
- Layer N became N1, a new Layer 1, in December 2024. In July 2026 N1 announced it is acquiring 01 Exchange, the first app incubated on N1, and trading moved to N1 Exchange at app.n1.xyz.
